Volcanoes National Park

Founded in 1925, Volcanoes National Park is Africa’s first national park and holds a unique place in wildlife conservation history. 

Located in northwestern Rwanda, the park forms part of the Virunga Mountain Range, which extends into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda and comprises eight volcanoes.Volcanoes National Park covers an area of 62 square miles (160 km2) including eight volcanoes. Of these eight volcanoes in the Virungas, visitors can see the following five: 

• Mount Bisoke (or Visoke), 12,175 feet (3,711 m)

• Gahinga, 11,397 feet (3,474 m)

• Karisimbi, 14,787 feet (4,507 91 m)

• Muhabura, 13,540 feet (4,127 m)

• Sabyinyo, 12,037 feet (3,669 m)

This stunning volcanic landscape is famed for its rare mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and the occasional sighting of elusive forest elephants. 

Beyond its wildlife, visitors can enjoy the awe-inspiring rain forests, rugged volcanic terrain, and unique high-altitude ecosystems filled with fascinating and diverse flora and fauna.World-famous primatologist Dian Fossey based her research at Volcanoes National Park starting in 1967. Fossey’s observations highlighted the need for partnership to protect threatened mountain gorillas. As a result of her studies, conservation efforts in the park are world-renowned, supporting local communities through ecotourism.
