Are There Any Threats Facing Victoria Falls National Park?

The media has caused a frenzy in the past few years with its "Victoria Falls Has Dried Up" headlines.

In June 2024, a study was published on the implications of climate change (El Niño phenomena) with its droughts and impact on tourism and the economy. The study revealed that these extreme weather events did, in fact, significantly impact the water flow of the falls, but not to the extent the media made it out to be.

Four El Niño events affected water flow at Victoria Falls between 1980 and 2024, and evidence shows that the flow is lower than the long-term average.

The study proposed measures to enhance resilience in the park. It suggested that the tourism industry focus on promoting activities unaffected by water levels and that close collaboration between the government, tourism industry, and conservation groups be achieved.

Sustainable practices should be promoted, conservation measures should be implemented, and water wastage should be reduced.

After all, tourism is a vital instrument for development, which indirectly affects livelihoods, so all efforts must be made to conserve the majestic waterfall and its surroundings.
