Overview
Ts’ehlanyane National Park is one of two national parks in Lesotho. It was founded in May 1991, owing its origin to the access road to the Mamohale tunnel. The drive was the first underground tunnel for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
The park is located deep in the Maloti Mountains in the northern Leribe District. It is part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area (MDTC). The MDTC aims to preserve the biodiversity of the region and make a positive impact on these Lesotho communities.
Ts’ehlanyane National Park sits at a high altitude of 6,365 - 10,210 feet (1,940 - 3,112 m) and spans approximately 5,600 square miles (14,504 km²). You can find one of Lesotho’s only Indigenous forests here, boasting numerous rare plant species.
Visitors are attracted to the park for its spectacular mountain scenery, unique flora, and thrilling hiking trails. The Lesotho Highlands have some of the most beautiful mountain passes and river valleys, giving credit to its nickname “roof of Africa.” On your hike, keep an eye out for Eland, rock hyrax, bushbuck, and the common duiker.

Ts’ehlanyane National Park isn’t famous for its wildlife. However, there are a few animals and birds you might spot on your safari trip. Our favorite is the common Eland, the largest antelope in the world. These regal antelope used to be extinct in Ts'ehlanyane, but they were reintroduced in 2009. Despite growing up to 11 feet (3 m) tall, Eland blends in with the tall winter grasses. Take a few minutes to scan the mountain slopes on your hike or horse ride.

You can visit Ts’ehlanyane National Park anytime throughout the year. The wildlife viewing is random and doesn’t differ much during the year. The weather is best from October to April, during the southern hemisphere summer. However, you can expect random spells of rain that may interfere with your outdoor adventures. The dry months are exceptionally cold from April to September, and the scenery looks dull.
