Murchison Falls National Park

Overview

Murchison Falls National Park, established as a game reserve in 1926 and a national park in 1952, is Uganda's oldest and most popular national park. 

The park has a long history of attracting famous names, including Sir Samuel and Lady Florence Baker, Ernest and Mary Hemingway, Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, and Humphrey Bogart while filming The African Queen. 

Locally known as Kabalega National Park, it sits on the eastern border of Lake Albert and has the Victoria Nile cutting through it. There, the 164-wide river (50 m) is squeezed through the narrow Devil's Caldron, sending 11,000 cubic feet per second (300 cubic meters) of water plunging 141 feet (43 m). 

The spectacular sight makes Murchison Falls National Park's boat safaris a must. As visitors travel up the river to the waterfall's base, they'll see some of the park's diverse wildlife, thanks to the varied landscape, including savannah, delta, woodland, and forest.

Visitors to the park can also arrange other adventures, including hot air balloon rides, fishing, game drives, nature walks, hikes to the top of the falls, chimpanzee tracking, and white-water rafting.
