4-Day Journey into the Wild - Moremi Game Reserve
Overview
The Moremi Game Reserve, situated in the Okavango Delta, is a vast and accessible area known for its rich wildlife. This reserve, covering approximately one-third of the delta, has a wide range of accommodations and trails, making it a popular destination for visitors.
Unlike other areas in the delta, Moremi is unique because it is the only part that is dedicated solely to the preservation of wildlife. It was first established as a reserve in 1963 in response to the rampant poaching that was decimating the local animal populations. Named after Moremi III, the chief of the local Batawana people, the reserve has expanded over time and now covers an area of nearly 5000 square kilometers.
Moremi has a diverse landscape, with large stretches of dry land separated by expansive wetlands. The most prominent areas are Chief's Island and Moremi Tongue, which can be accessed by mokoro (dugout canoe) or 4WD, respectively. Habitats within the reserve vary from mopane woodlands and thorn scrub to savannah, riparian woodlands, grasslands, floodplains, marshes, and permanent waterways.
Home to the Big Five (lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, and rhinos), Moremi also boasts the largest population of red lechwe in Africa. It is also a haven for endangered African wild dogs, with one of the largest remaining populations residing within the reserve. For birding enthusiasts, Moremi offers a diverse range of species, including the elusive Pel's fishing owl, making it a top destination for birdwatching in Africa.
Entry fees for Moremi should be paid in advance at the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) office in Maun. However, they can also be paid at the gate if necessary. It is important for self-driving visitors to have a confirmed reservation at one of the four public campsites in order to enter the reserve.
The nearby village of Khwai offers a couple of shops for basic supplies, but visitors will need to travel to Kasane or Maun for petrol and other necessities. With its abundant wildlife and accessible trails, Moremi Game Reserve is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic African safari experience.

Wildlife
Moremi Game Reserve offers incredible opportunities for viewing wildlife, both on land and from a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). Despite being a challenging sighting, both black and white rhinos have been successfully reintroduced to the reserve. The Big Five, including lions, elephants, and buffalos, are easily seen in the area, while leopards are known to be particularly relaxed and wild dog sightings are some of the best in all of Africa.

Visiting Moremi Game Reserve is possible all year round, but the most opportune time for observing wildlife is during the dry months of July to October. It should be noted that the wet months, from January to March, may pose challenges as certain parts of the reserve may be inaccessible and certain accommodations could be closed.
