Overview
A private reserve located between Manzini and Big Bend, Mkhaya Game Reserve was established in 1979 to protect the country’s indigenous Nguni cattle, before becoming a sanctuary for endangered species. It is now most famous for its rhino population, offering some of the best black and white rhino viewing in Africa, with tours taking place both by jeep and on foot. It has strong links with the local population and is staffed and patrolled entirely by Swazis from neighbouring communities, making for an effective poaching deterrent.

There are large numbers of white rhino here alongside the more elusive black rhino, and one of the great thrills of a visit is the chance to track them on foot with a guide – a heart-in-mouth encounter that allows you to get closer than you might ever have imagined.

You can visit Mkhaya Game Reserve at any time of year and still have plenty of thrilling encounters, given that some animals are kept in large drive-through enclosures. For optimum conditions, however, visit during the dry winter months of May to September, when sparse vegetation makes animals easier to spot as they congregate around riverbanks and waterholes. November to February is wet and hot, and there’s a possibility that rain could affect your safari plans.
