Lochinvar National Park

There are different species of wildlife in each of the three regions of the park.

Northern Floodplain: In this wetland area that includes the Chunga lagoon, you'll find the Kafue Lechwe. They love the shallow water and have been labeled “semi-aquatic” — a unique description of an antelope! It’s because they spend a lot of their day wading in the water to feed off the aquatic grasses that few other herbivores eat.

The Chunga Lagoon is also where you’ll find the bird life that attracts most visitors to the park. With 248 recorded bird species, it isn't easy to pinpoint the highlights, but birdwatchers can view over 50 species of raptors, many wading birds, and migratory species in the wet season that are seldom seen in the rest of Zambia.

Central Grassland: South of the wetlands, in the center of Lochinvar National Park, lies a grassland area that provides adequate grazing for buffalo, zebra, oribi, and wildebeest. 

Southern Woodlands: In the southernmost part of Lochinvar, the dry miombo woodlands are home to sparse herds of greater kudu, as well as bushbuck, baboon, vervet monkeys, duiker, and spotted hyena. The dominating feature of the area is the many termite mounds (termitaria).
