Getting to Lochinvar presents no problem as the Livingstone-Lusaka Road is tarred and in good condition. Having your own vehicle in the park, ideally a camper, will give you flexibility regarding where you sleep and probably more comfort!

Driving to Lochinvar National Park

Lochinvar National Park is a three-hour drive on the tarred Lusaka-Livingstone Road from the capital, Lusaka, a distance of 115 miles (186 km) to Monza.

From there, it’s a 44-mile (71-km) drive on gravel to the Lochinvar gates. Most visitors fly into Lusaka’s international airport and drive from there to Lochinvar.

It can easily be visited on your way to Kafue National Park. (Link opportunity: Kafue National Park).

Alternatively, one could fly into Livingstone (a good idea if Victoria Falls is also on your itinerary). From Livingstone to Lochinvar is 175 miles (282 km), which would take about five to six hours.

Flying to Lochinvar National Park

There are no scheduled flights to Lochinvar National Park. There is, however, a landing strip in the park, so it would be possible to charter a plane.

If you’re keen on a better level of accommodation, we suggest that you allow your tour operator to book you into The Moorings Campsite, which is about 37 miles (60 km) from the park gates.

Is Lochinvar National Park Safe to Visit?

Zambia is generally a very safe country, and the Zambian people are hospitable and friendly. While the park is seldom visited by tourists, and you might feel a little isolated, there is no danger in spending time there.

There are no predators in Lochinvar National Park, and you are welcome to venture out on foot to view the wildlife.

Is Lochinvar National Park a Malaria Area?

Unfortunately, as in much of Zambia, malaria is a common illness, particularly in the wet months of December through March.

Before you visit, consult your doctor regarding anti-malaria medication, and while in the park, use mosquito repellent and wear garments that cover your arms and legs, particularly in the evening.

Conclusion

Sadly, Lochinvar National Park has suffered years of neglect, and the park's infrastructure has been allowed to deteriorate. The only accommodation is the Lochinvar Safari Lodge, which has minimal facilities, and the roads are in poor condition. But if you’re prepared to camp, and want to see the most spectacular range of birdlife in Africa, contact one of these tour operators in Zambia for a very special visit to Lochinvar!
