Dorob National Park

Overview

Dorob National Park isn’t one of the largest national parks, but it’s still expansive enough to cover around 3,012 square miles (7,800 km²). 

Established in 2010, this sprawling park forms part of Namibia’s coastal conservation area, linking the Skeleton Coast National Park in the north to the Namib-Naukluft Park in the south.

But what makes Dorob so extraordinary is the variety of ecosystems you can find inside. There are rolling sand dunes, endless gravel plains, and wetlands teeming with birdlife. 

When you think it’s only desert, the Atlantic coastline appears, creating a unique ecological view. But perhaps its most defining feature is the surreal expanse of eroded hills known as the Moon Landscape.

The flora here includes hardy desert plants like the legendary Welwitschia, which can live for over a thousand years. 

At the same time, the fauna ranges from nimble desert-adapted animals to vibrant bird species. The park also offers a host of recreational opportunities, such as quad biking, sandboarding, fishing, and photography. In other words, every visitor will find something to enjoy.

But it’s not all fun and games — Dorob National Park is critical in protecting its fragile desert and marine ecosystems, a responsibility shared between the government and local communities.
