Overview
Chizarira National Park, spanning the dramatic folds of the Zambezi escarpment in northern Zimbabwe, overlooks the great Zambezi Valley and the upper waters of Lake Kariba.
The park's rich history, dating back to 1938 when it was first designated as a non-hunting reserve, adds depth to your visit. It then evolved into a game reserve in 1963, and finally, in 1975, it was officially established as a national park.
Notably, the 772-square mile (2,000 km²) park is the fourth-largest national park in Zimbabwe and the least known due to its isolated location in arguably the most remote wilderness area.
Chizarira, a name derived from the Batonga word "chijalila," which translates to "great barrier" in English, is a testament to the park's majestic mountains and bountiful hills, which form part of the Zambezi escarpment.
Visitors are attracted to this pristine park due to its wild and remote nature, impressive gorges, plentiful natural springs, and picturesque landscape.
The park has a good variety of expected wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, and leopards.
