Augrabies Falls National Park

Overview

In the great Northern Cape province of South Africa, this hidden gem combines dramatic waterfalls with a beautiful landscape, making it a unique paradise for wildlife and photographers. 

The main attraction of the park is the majestic Augrabies Falls, where the Orange River drops 56 meters into an 18-kilometer gorge. It’s particularly spectacular during the rainy season when the river is in full flow.

The name “Augrabies” comes from the Khoi people calling the area “Aukoerebis”, or “place of great noise”, as the powerful flow of the water plunges into the gorge.

Besides the dramatic waterfalls, the park stretches far and wide and provides a home to a diverse range of ecosystems. Visitors can enjoy spotting wildlife, such as leopards, klipspringers, giraffes, springboks, gemsboks, and more. There is also an abundance of birdlife, with over 200 bird species, perfect for birdwatching enthusiasts.

This incredible park’s secluded location means it is far away from light pollution, making it a prime location for stargazing and viewing the Milky Way. Adventure seekers will be excited to know the park offers hiking trails, river rafting, and mountain biking activities, along with guided game drives.

A prominent landmark of Augrabies Falls is the Moon Rock. It is a massive granite dome that will give you the best panoramic view of the area. Visitors are encouraged to view the Quiver Tree, which is like the aloe, part of the Augrabies landscape.
