If you'd like to enjoy the white sands of East Africa's infamous coast, Mombasa, but still have a feel for the forest environment, then Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve is the perfect place for you. As one of the remnants of the great and massive East African coastal forests, Arabuko Sokoke is a cool and shaded retreat worth all the hype.
As a matter of fact, Arabuko Sokoke currently ranks as the second largest birdlife conversation in Africa, after Congo. It covers 420 square kilometres and is about 110 km north of Mombasa. On the northwest side of the forest, you will find the Arabuko Sokoke National Park, which only constitutes a small fraction of the larger forest.
The national park was gazetted in the 1980s and is now managed by the Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service. The forest is known for its huge population of endemic (species only found in a single geographic region) mammals, birds, and plants.

The forest houses some of the rarest trees, containing three different varieties of forests, including mixed forest, Cynometra, and Brachystegia. Aside from that, this forest contains endemic species such as the Clarke's weaver, Sokoke pipit, and the spotted ground thrush.

Even though you can visit the forest all year round, including the rainy seasons, which will test your grit, it's best to head there during the drier months for more sightseeing. The drier months are January, February and July through to October. These months offer a calmer and more pleasant scenery to properly enjoy your safari.
