Hlane Royal National Park is an incredible protected area located in Swaziland. It is known for its diversity of habitats, ranging from open savannas to woodland and wetlands, and its diverse range of flora and fauna. The park is home to some of the last remaining lowveld species in Swaziland, including the white rhinoceros, giraffe, and zebra.

A private reserve located between Manzini and Big Bend, Mkhaya Game Reserve was established in 1979 to protect the country’s indigenous Nguni cattle, before becoming a sanctuary for endangered species. It is now most famous for its rhino population, offering some of the best black and white rhino viewing in Africa, with tours taking place both by jeep and on foot. It has strong links with the local population and is staffed and patrolled entirely by Swazis from neighbouring communities, making for an effective poaching deterrent.

Quiet, beautiful and easily accessible, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Eswatini’s oldest protected area, a wild swathe of open grassland overlooked by the granite hulk of Nyonyane Mountain. It’s a mere 4,560 ha but it packs a huge amount into a small space, including some of the region’s rarer species. There are black-backed jackals here, alongside blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, chacma baboon and African wild cat.
