SOUTHERN TANZANIA

The reserves in southern Tanzania are immense, remote and extremely wild, with little human habitation within their boundaries. Today they offer some of Africa's finest virgin bush, unchanged through centuries, and inhabited by well over a million wild animals. The rivers, swamps, woodlands and savannahs are fascinating. Accommodation is limited, small camps popular and walking safaris the norm.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a very short flight from Dar es Salaam and makes the perfect beach add-on to any southern safari. There are many accommodation options to choose from, however, Mapenzi Beach Resort or Ocean Paradise Resort may be ones to look at first.

Upgrade option

For those who wish to upgrade to Selous Safari Camp, please contact us for the additional cost. Selous Safari Camp is a delightful little camp that is very comfortable, has an excellent reputation for its cuisine and provides some of the best guides in the region.

Saadani National Park

Tanzania's most recently gazetted national park, Saadani is the only national park in East Africa with ocean frontage and therefore, the only place that can genuinely lay claim to offering beautiful beaches and safari in a single location. Geographically it is the closest National Park to both Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar and as it is a coastal park it is the only place one can see wildlife and birdlife interacting on the coast. There are at least 24 species of large mammals found here and the beach area is a breeding ground for the green turtle. The safari lodge is comfortably furnished and delightfully perched on the edge of the ocean, a stones-throw from all the wonders of the park. For those interested in fly-camping here, please contact us.

WESTERN EXPLORER
TOUR CODE RS3901

Lovingly created, here are two of Tanzania’s, if not Africa’s, smallest and most authentic ‘old style’ classic bush camps: Greystoke and Chada.

Set in stunning surroundings, these exquisitely furnished rustic camps are run by the owners and their hand-picked guides and staff. They are all there simply because they adore it, something you can sense the moment you enter camp. Whether it is the Robinson Crusoe experience complete with chimp encounters at Greystoke in Mahale or the exclusive views of plains filled with lion, buffalo and zebra at Chada in Katavi, these two camps will leave you dreaming for many years to come. For poetic souls and those who yearn for the real ‘old Africa’, these camps are certainly worth the extra investment. These two trips can be added onto the end of any safari, or joined together as we have done in Wild Instincts.

Safari Routing

01 Fly from Arusha to Mahale or Katavi and transfer to camp for three days of chimp-treks and boating from Mahale or game drives and walking safaris from Katavi.
04 Early morning flight to Arusha with a
picnic lunch.

Because there is limited accommodation in Selous and Ruaha, we may need to recommend alternative camps during peak season. So please book early. Add-on beach stays are simple to arrange. For these, we recommend Pemba, Mafia or Mnemba Islands. To discuss the options available, or to tailor-make any other itineraries, please give us a call.
